Michael said in the interview that the success of his 1987 album Faith and the subsequent tour left him on the verge of an ’emotional breakdown’
He also spoke about struggling with fame and not wanting to be ‘another cliche’
‘The tragedy of fame is when no one shows up and you’re singing to the cleaning lady in some empty joint,’ wrote Sinatra in his letter to Michael
At the time of the interview Michael had not yet come out of the closet, and he would later reveal that contributed to his anxiety about fame
