Honor-Killing should be called Dishonor Murder

November 30, 2013

There are some very active women’s organizations and international units attempting to curb abuse of and violence against women. They work to bring awareness to the cultural, and sometimes religious, norms, laws, and practices that have created and preserve these conditions. But those efforts are too small-scale. This violence still occurs in many countries in the world, and it is most prevalent, especially in its most acute forms, in countries with a predominantly Muslim population. What is needed is a large-scale attack by national governments and international organizations.
At the base of this violence is the concept of honor, which women supposedly embody. Because of their lack of education and empowerment, women affected by this concept have rarely been able to challenge the nature and consequences of it.
Women are said to dishonor the community; family; and, for Muslim women, perhaps the Islamic religion if their actual or perceived behavior is regarded as violating ingrained cultural or religious norms. They may do this by obvious acts of sexual indiscretions, but also by not abiding by instructions and demands of men, family, or community, such as refusal to enter into an arranged marriage, seeking a divorce, or even wearing Western-type clothes. Sometimes “honor” has been even more misused to refer to disagreements over inheritance or to prevent women from marrying someone they have freely chosen.
Violence against women takes many forms: verbal abuse and physical beatings; being stoned or burned; disfigurement by acid; threats; false imprisonment; sexual abuse; forced marriages, in which the female is threatened to enter a marriage against her own will; female genital mutilation; and at the most extreme, murder, or “honor-killing.”
The custom of honor killings of women in Arab Muslim societies is well-known. Among many others, Phyllis Chesler, in an important article, “Are Honor Killings Simply Domestic Violence?” (Middle East Quarterly, Spring 2009), pointed out that this kind of murder of women differed significantly from common domestic violence and that this is part of Islamic culture.
The United Nations Population Fund estimates — certainly an underestimate — that 5,000 women are killed each year for “dishonoring” their families. UNICEF calculates that about two-thirds of all killings in Palestinian territories are honor-killings. In those territories, the West Bank and Gaza Strip, 54 women were killed between 2007 and 2010, and 25 have been murdered in 2013.
Law in the patriarchal Arab countries, as in the Ottoman Empire, has sustained the cultural tradition that women have an inferior status. Men are only mildly punished or not punished at all for murdering a female relative whose behavior is judged as bringing dishonor to the family.

Obama slaps Catholics and The Vatican in the face with embassy relocation

November 30, 2013

The Obama administration has decided to shut down the free-standing American embassy to the Holy See. The offices for the Ambassador to the Vatican will be moved onto the grounds of the larger American embassy to Italy, in a separate building.
The move is being justified as a result of the security reviews that followed the attacks on our embassy in Benghazi last year but five former American envoys are strenuously objecting, reports John Allen of the National Catholic Reporter :
Justified primarily on the grounds of enhanced security, the move is described by former U.S. Ambassador James Nicholson, who’s also a former Secretary of Veterans Affairs in the Bush administration and a former chair of the Republican National Committee, as a “massive downgrade” in U.S./Vatican ties.

“It’s turning this embassy into a stepchild of the embassy to Italy,” Nicholson said.

“The Holy See is a pivot point for international affairs and a major listening post for the United States,” he said, “and to shoehorn [the U.S. delegation] into an office annex inside another embassy is an insult to American Catholics and to the Vatican.”

Nicholson, who spoke in an interview Wednesday with NCR, joins former Bush envoys Francis Rooney and Mary Ann Glendon as well as Raymond Flynn, the first Clinton ambassador, and Thomas Melady, who served the first President Bush, in objecting.

Nicholson called the security argument a “smokescreen.”

“That’s like saying people get killed on highways because they drive cars on them,” he said. “We’re not a pauper nation … if we want to secure an embassy, we certainly can.” He said protection at the current location is “state of the art.”

Flynn described the move as part of broader secular hostility to religious groups, the Catholic church in particular.

“It’s not just those who bomb churches and kill Catholics in the Middle East who are our antagonists, but it’s also those who restrict our religious freedoms and want to close down our embassy to the Holy See,” Flynn told NCR.

Flynn said he can’t see any “diplomatic or political benefit to the United States” from the relocation and called it “shortsighted.”

CatholicVote considers the move to be “an unmistakable slap in the face.”

Moving our Ambassador to the Vatican inside of our Italian Embassy sends a clear message: the diplomatic post doesn’t matter much to the United States.

Former Vatican Ambassador James Nicholson told Catholic Vote:
“It’s another manifestation of the antipathy of this administration both to Catholics and to the Vatican – and to Christians in the Middle East. This is a key post for intermediation in so many sovereignties but particularly in the Middle East. This is anything but a good time to diminish the stature of this post. To diminish the stature of this post is to diminish its influence.”

“The State Department has for a long time wanted to do this. It came up when I was an ambassador. I explained the folly of this and it went away. But now they seem determined to do this. The perception is [with this action] that the United States is showing a lack of appreciation for the relevance of its diplomatic partner in the Vatican.”

Justin Beiber’s trashy behavior catches up to him

November 30, 2013

HEY, BIEBER – HERE’S MY $3 MILLION ITEM! When JUSTIN BIEBER tossed that wild-and-crazy bash at his Calabasas estate, he ordered guests and workers to sign confidentiality agreements threatening to sock them for three million$$$ if they breathed a word to anyone, but – HERE’S MY SCOOP: The Dwieb got trashed – literally – when two guys at his party picked him up, shoved him into a garbage container and clamped him inside! Reports My Party Spy: “Two hip-hop wannabes Justin had invited arrived with a really cute girl – the girlfriend of one of them. And as guests began drinking and getting high, Justin flirted quite openly with the guy’s girlfriend throughout the night. But at one point, Boyfriend realized Girlfriend was missing… and so was Bieber!” The suspicious guy and his pal began searching the house – and finally found the girl backed up against a kitchen wall, furiously making out with the panting pop star. The guy erupted, screaming: “What the f*** are you doing with my girlfriend?” He lunged for Justin, who backed off and barked sarcastically: “Hey, man, be cool. It’s not like you’re married to her!” (BIG MISTAKE, KID!) Instantly, the guys yanked Justin off his feet, hauled him to a plastic garbage can outside the kitchen door, shoved him inside – then locked down the handles as he and the girl screamed for help! Justin’s bodyguards came running and sprung him loose as his tormentors left the mansion, dragging the girl behind them. “Other than that, it was a great party,” sighed my spy!

Beyoncé too hot for the pyramids

She is adored by her millions of fans and has even earned the nickname Queen B.

Zahi Hawass, Egypt’s former head of antiquities, claims he banned the singer from visiting the Pyramids after her ‘stupid and rude’ behaviour.

Thanksgiving violence at three WalMart stores

November 30, 2013

As a believer in capitalism and liberty, I understand Walmart’s desire to squeeze as much money out of the Christmas shopping season as possible. But if we don’t want to invite government control, we have to be able to police ourselves, and Walmart just isn’t doing that. Opening on Thanksgiving night is not only a cruel thing to do to your employees, it brings out a tired crowd — many of whom have probably had too much to drink — and that only increases the likelihood of this:
At least three people got into a fight in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart in Rialto, Calif., because shoppers were cutting in line, Sgt. Nicholas Borchard told NBC Southern California. Two were taken into custody after the fight at around 7 p.m. local time (10 p.m. ET), he added. A police officer suffered a minor unknown injury.
A man in Claypool Hill, West Virginia, was slashed to the bone with a knife after threatening another man with a gun in an argument over a Wal-Mart parking spot, Tazewell County Sheriff Brian Hieatt told NBC station WVVA. Both faced charges after the incident that happened at 6:30 p.m. the station reported. …
Another shopper was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer after getting into an argument with a New Jersey Wal-Mart store manager about a television set, police told NBC New York. Officers arrived at the scene at 6:39 p.m. and once they had pacified the customer they also charged the shopper with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, Garfield police told the station.
Three different stores, three different acts of violence, all happening Thanksgiving night.
What does Walmart expect after dark when bad guys know people will be hauling expensive goodies to their cars? Maybe Walmart is comfortable with this because they back ObamaCare. People might get hurt, but at least they are insured!

Black Friday a mass mind control hoax

November 29, 2013

The multitudes of Americans who brave the freezing cold and the rampaging mobs in the belief it’s all worth it to get a great ‘deal’ on electronic goods they don’t really need and can’t afford are victims of a gigantic scam.

Image: Black Friday (YouTube).
Black Friday is a hoax.
While believing that they are paying far less for high-end consumer products, shoppers who throw themselves on the altar of Black Friday madness today will in the aggregate be paying more for such items than they would at other times of the year.
As Bloomberg Businessweek reports, despite the hype, despite the coupons, despite the “friends and family deals,” the profit margins of large retailers are actually higher during the holiday period. The idea that big stores are losing out in order to provide Americans with massively discounted goods is a complete hoax.
