Vampire Killing Kits – Christmas gift for the person who has everything else
December 24, 2015You’ve seen them turn up on auction sites from time to time: “authentic vampire-killing kits,” attributed to a master craftsman, Professor Ernst Blomberg of Germany. (One sold for $12,000 at Sotheby’s.) A British museum curator explains how he proved them to be fakes — and why they’re nonetheless still very valuable.
The typical vampire-killing kit, supposedly carried around Europe by a bunch of Van Helsing-wannabes, consisted of a walnut box with a hinged lid, housing such items as a wooden stake and mallet, crucifix, pistol and vials of garlic powder.
Over the years, some have said they were authentic; others said they were made as souvenirs for gullible tourists who descended upon Transylvania following the publication of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
Real Vampires of New Orleans
October 26, 2015John Edgar Browning met his first “real vampire” in a Gothic apparel store.
A doctoral candidate at Louisiana State University at the time, Browning had already been on the hunt for several months. He was talking to the store owner of Wicked Orleans, a Gothic-style clothing and leather shop in New Orleans’s French Quarter, when a middle-aged woman and two teenage boys walked through the door.
The store owner stopped mid-sentence. This woman, he motioned, was one of the people Browning was looking for.
Beware the Vampire Police
October 17, 2015They want our blood, too.
You may have heard about this. In Texas – one of America’s, uh, “freest” states – the cops have got the power to throw you over the hood of a cruiser and forcibly extract your blood if you decline to take a Breathalyzer test. After having been forced to stop for no specific reason at a “sobriety” checkpoint. Your refusal to cooperate – that is, to prove your innocence (that’s how it works in America nowadays) to the satisfaction of a cop is all the provocation necessary. Roll down your sleeve.
Or else.
Count (oops, Police Chief) Art Acevedo of the Austin PD wants to expand what had been a “pilot” program – weekends only – to a full time regular operation.
