March 1, 2013

Bonnie Franklin, the pert, redheaded actress whom millions came to identify with for her role as divorced mom Ann Romano on the long-running sitcom “One Day at a Time,” has died.

She died Friday at her home due to complications from pancreatic cancer, family members said in a statement. She was 69. Her family had announced she was diagnosed with cancer in September.

Franklin was a veteran stage and television performer before “One Day At a Time” made her a star.

Beauty trick promises thicker hair and better volume

March 1, 2013

Adding coarse sea salt to shampoo is an easy way to get thicker and fuller hair, according to a fashion and beauty website.

In a new ModaMob video, host Marianna Hewitt explains that hair needs exfoliation just as much as skin.

Mixing three parts coarse sea salt with two parts shampoo apparently does the trick.

By using this ‘detoxifying blend’, hair will be stripped of dead skin cells, old product build-up and dirt.

And it won’t lose any of its natural, healthy oils.

The former Miss California creates the blend using a $1 shampoo and a $2 tub of salt.

She gives a step-by-step explanation of how to create the hair treatment

A small portion of Taco Bell’s ground beef contained horse DNA

March 1, 2013

Four beef products sold by Bird’s Eye, Taco Bell and catering supplier Brakes have been found to contain horse DNA, the Food Standards Agency says.

This is the third wave of test results received by the FSA, which has now received a total of 5,430 test results.

Meanwhile, new tests conducted on beef retail products revealed no new cases of horsemeat adulteration, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) has said.

This latest round of tests saw 1,797 products being examined.

The FSA has asked retailers to test beef products for the presence of more than 1% of horsemeat, with anything above that figure considered to be a sign of adulteration.

The affected products are Birds Eye’s Traditional Spaghetti Bolognese and Beef Lasagne; Brakes’ Spicy Beef Skewer; Taco Bell’s Ground Beef.

Taco Bell has three outlets in Britain and says all its affected stock has been removed. The products had come from a supplier in Europe, the company said.

A spokesman for Taco Bell said: “Once we learned of this issue, we immediately voluntarily tested our product for our three Taco Bell restaurants in the UK.

“Based on that testing, we learned ingredients supplied to us from one supplier in Europe tested positive for horsemeat.

“We immediately withdrew it from sale, and discontinued purchase of that meat and contacted the Food Standards Agency with this information. We apologise to our customers and take this matter very seriously as food quality is our highest priority.”

The Grim Reapers foot soldiers

One day back in high school, a very interesting English teacher asked our class a moral question: if you could press a button and get a million dollars, but a little old man — with no family, friends, or ties of any kind — in the backwoods of China would die, would you push that button?
Approximately a third of the class raised their hands in the affirmative.

Desperate Joan Rivers bottom feeds to stay in the media spotlight

March 1, 2013

Has Joan Rivers gone too far (again)?

The comedian has sparked controversy over a joke she made about Heidi Klum in a sexy Julien Macdonald dress at Elton John’s AIDS Foundation Academy Awards party.

“The last time a German looked this hot was when they were pushing Jews into the ovens,” Rivers said of the German-born supermodel on Monday’s episode of E!’s Fashion Police.

The Anti-Defamation League’s director Abraham H. Foxman, a Holocaust survivor himself, said in a statement that the comments were “vulgar and offensive to Jews and Holocaust survivors.”
