Students at elite Cambridge

University have caused an

uproar with an online tabloid

newspaper –

complete with photos of

scantily clad girls.

The Tab website,

which is modelled on Britain’s

redtops and bills its student

models as Tab Totty,

has caused controversy

on campus,

reports the Daily Mail.

Organisers claim the pictures

of the semi-nude students are

intended to provoke debate

but feminist critics condemned

the use of the girls as

‘sexual objects’.

The three undergraduate editors

behind the online publication

boast so much interest had been

generated by the furore that the

site had crashed.

George Marangos-Gilks, 22,

a third-year politics student

from Downing College, said:

“We knew Tab Totty would

be controversial but that’s a

good thing because we were

trying to provoke debate.

“All the Tab editors are feminists

and this is a borderline issue.

There are some feminists that

disagree with this but there are

others who say women have a

right to be sexy and proud.”

But Cambridge Student Union

women’s officer Natalie Szarek

urged the website to remove

the photos, saying:

“Tab Totty plays into the idea

of woman as sexual objects.”

The Tab suffered a setback

when it was forced to remove

an image of blonde student

Becky Adams –

in a punt wearing a pink bikini

and high heels –

after she complained

it was ’embarrassing’.

Other models include ‘size 12

stunner’ Emmalina Thompsell,

and 21-year-old kickboxer Heidi

who apparently has a

“triple first in the bag”.

“Going against the grain,

I’d like to see myself as someone

with brainpower and boobs,

a pairing which I feel Cambridge

culture strives to deny,”

Heidi says on The Tab.
