Baby
elephant
trapped in
manhole

A rescue operation was
launched in Thailand after a
baby elephant got stuck
in a drainage ditch.
The elephant lost its footing
and fell in the ditch while walking
with his owner in Rayong province,
eastern Thailand,
reports the Daily Telegraph.
It took three hours
to rescue the calf,
with a team using a bulldozer
to widen the manhole,
and it was eventually
freed unharmed.
Mahouts,
the men who drive the elephants,
often use them to beg on the
streets of many of the larger
cities in Thailand.
Baby elephants,
sought after due to their
cute appearance,
are among the most sought after,
with some taught tricks
to appeal to tourists.
Other elephants are used
to perform heavy manual work.
Concerns over animal cruelty
have led to many areas of Thailand
banning elephant displays,
although it has not stopped
a number of mahouts continuing
to use them for tourism.

Gay elephant
wears expensive
slippers
While the baby elephant
was struggling in Thailand,
Gay, a 40-year-old Asian
elephant in Britain,
was fitted with a pair of
£500 slippers.
Gay has been suffering
from painful abscesses on
her front feet for the past
few months so her keepers
at Paignton Zoo in Devon
decided to commission
the footwear.
