Dictator Mugabe maims and kills to retain power in Zimbabwe

Amnesty International

concerned at continuing

violence in Zimbabwe

Friday, June 27, 2008

Amnesty International said today that it’s deeply disturbed by the continuing campaign of State violence and intimidation taking place in Zimbabwe, THE BELEFAST TELEGRAPH reports.

The country’s elections have been underway all day, despite Robert Mugabe being the only candidate.

There have been worldwide calls to postpone the poll until the security situation improves.

Turnout was said to be slow in the poll, in spite of threats that failure to vote will lead to punishment.

Amnesty spokesperson Colm O’Gorman says they are very concerned about hundreds of human rights activists who have been detained in Zimbabwean prisons in recent weeks, saying today,

“People who were seen as political opponents of the Mugabe regime,

who are in fact simply exercising their demands for human rights are being arrested and detained arbitrarily with no access to proper criminal justice processes.”
